Welcome Back!!

Esteemed colleagues,

I want to welcome back our veteran teachers, counselors, nurses, and social workers and welcome all of our new staff to the 2016-2017 school year.  I am incredibly proud and humbled to have a chance to address all the great members we have teaching, counseling, nursing and working in School District U-46.

We have a brand new full day kindergarten program, an expanding dual language program, a fairly new Eureka math program, large class sizes, and more responsibilities with less time to complete them—we have many challenges ahead of us, but I believe The ETA membership is fully capable of rising up to these and other challenges.

I, along with the rest of your leadership team and building level ETA leaders are here to support your needs for our success.  We have union members at all of the schools, representatives that are responsive and helpful, and leadership that is dedicated and knowledgeable.

As you begin the school year, please remember that you may be the only consistent figure in your students’ lives.  You are important, you are influential, and you set the example for these impressionable children, so we will continue to do what all great educators do.  We will continue to care for, educate, keep safe, and inspire our students to be the next great leaders of this great country.

“Teachers are expected to reach unattainable goals with inadequate tools. The miracle is that at times they accomplish this impossible task.”

– Haim Ginott

The Elgin Teachers Association will be there to support you all along the way.  Good luck and have a great school year!!

Business, reminders and news

We are working on a cleaning up and modernizing of the ETA website at this time.  It will be an invaluable resource and a place find important information.  Be on the lookout for the refreshed theeta.org website.

2017 is the last year of our contract, The Elgin Agreement.  As such, we will begin contract negotiations in the not too distant future.  Please be on the lookout for information on the Contract Improvement Committee (CIC) for those that are interested in helping inform the negotiation team.

The Early Retirement Option (ERO) has expired because the Illinois General Assembly has decided against extending it. The ERO allowed teachers to retire before age 60 without a penalty.

What this means for members is that you will no longer contribute for the option, which was 0.4% of salary.  This contribution to TRS will be refunded to teachers without interest.

Later this year you will receive information and forms from TRS that must be completed.  Please read the information carefully.

Refunds could be minimal if you have not been teaching much since July 1, 2005, or large if you have been teaching longer and have a higher salary.

If the refund is taken through a check, this will be considered taxable and you will receive a 1099 for your income taxes.

If the refund is rolled into a 403b, rollover IRA, 401k, 457c, or any other deferred investment option, this will not be a taxable event.  Be sure to follow all rollover rules and consult your tax advisor.

RA dates

The Representative Assembly (RA) will meet monthly during the school year.  Remember that sites have the ability to send a representative to vote for their site.  The number of representatives is a ratio of 1 representative for every 10 ETA members at the site.  Any member is allowed and encouraged to attend RA meetings, but only ETA Reps are allowed to vote at the RA.

There are still sites out there without representation, so please consider being a representative for your school!!
