Instructional Council, May 12, 2016

Summary Statements

Instructional Council held two meetings on this day in order to hear initial proposals, have discussions about them, and to vote on the proposals.

Morning meeting:

Instructional Council heard an initial proposal for Elementary Physical Education. This would be a two year phase in with K-2 in 2016/17 and 3 to 6 in 2017/18.

Instructional Council heard a proposal for kindergarten science resources. The resource was chosen by the kindergarten science early implementers and reviewed by other kdg teachers.

Instructional Council heard a proposal for an 11th and 12th grade ELA resource, StudySync. This resource is already being used by grades 6 to 10.

Instructional Council also heard a proposal for AP Physics I. This is a physics course based in Algebra rather than Calculus. This course would be offered only at Larkin for the 2016/17 school year and if successful, may be offered district-wide in the future.

Afternoon meeting

Instructional Council approved all of the proposals that were presented in the morning. – – Members were impressed by the thoroughness of the P. E. proposal and the 2 in order to collaborate where possible.

– Members encouraged on-going professional development for all elementary teachers to support the use of the inquiry science method.

– Discussion about the ELA proposal and the AP Physics I proposal were positive with members feeling that they were necessary additions.
