Special Education Committee Highlights

January 15, 2013

UPDATES from Pam Harris, Director of Special Education

  • Budget:  Overall, the district is receiving 85% of funds it is entitled to have.  Medicaid reimbursement is significantly decreased from past years.

  • Annual Review Training – Elementary and Early Childhood special education teachers were trained on November 7th.  Teachers will be conducting their own annual reviews for the rest of the school year.  Supervisors will be available to provide support as needed.

  • CAC Updates

!!Save the Date!!  CAC Parent Resource Fair – 3/2/2013 (9-1pm at EHS)

Each year support for this event gets better and better.  Requesting staff volunteers to help assist with providing childcare so that parents can get the most out of this event.  If you’re interested in volunteering for this event, please email: Donnie Ryan –  Flyers will be going out to parents.

  • Transition Planning (for students 14 ½ and up) – Training for supervisors/divisionals will be conducted first.  Tracy Morton at Center House is organizing this.   The goal is to have this completed in February.  There was a discussion regarding the need for training for teachers in this area.  Staff noted that samples or templates would benefit staff in developing these plans.

Leatrice Satterwhite, Assistant Director of Special Education

  • PIT Crew – Prior to winter break, a job posting for an additional full-time PIT crew member was advertised.   Over the break, six interviews were conducted, and   one person was hired.  As of January 7, all schools needing a PIT crew member were covered.  PIT is considered a temporary intervention (2-4 weeks).  Currently, no schools are on the wait list.

Leatrice will be presenting to principals tomorrow regarding samples of PIT crew communication, details and expectations.  Leatrice is recommending that about three days before the PIT crew member’s assignment is finished, that they take on a more observational and supportive role rather than just stopping the service abruptly on the last day.  Leatrice provides principals with advance notice (usually a week) regarding when a PIT crew member’s time is coming to an end.
