Summary provided by Judith Arman
The first veto session has come to an end. Senate Bill (SB) 512, Pension Reform, was not brought forward for a vote. It is believed that there are not enough votes in the Legislature for SB 512 to pass. It is also believed that this bill will not see action until after the Illinois Primary Election.
That does not mean we should relax. Here are a few Actions ETA members can take:
- Contact your State Legislator while they are in their home offices from now until November 8, the beginning of the second veto.
- Watch Jim Reeds video at www.ieanea.org or http://youtu.be/3tZ7wNUX2_k
- Visit the IEA website and update your profile
- Talk to your family and friends encouraging them to call their legislators.
- Tell lawmakers to oppose SB512 for the following reasons:
- It is unconstitutional
- We do NOT receive Social Security, pensions are our life savings.
- We have always paid our retirement costs; the state has not kept their promise.
- SB 512 would cost taxpayers an additional $34 billion dollars over the next 15 years.
Here are a few other educational bills that may be brought forward in the next legislative session beginning November 8, 2011.
- HB 3793(PTELL) Property Tax Extension Law
- HB 3847 Regional Offices of Education (ROE) funding
- HB 605 School Report Card
Information for these bills can be found at www.ilga.gov
